About

tallboyjohnShort version:
Writer. Born in Nashville, TN; raised in Cupertino, CA. Married 35 years to Catherine (who goes by Cat), an accountant and photographer. Lived in San Diego nineteen years before, in August 2015, moving to Asheville, NC.

Longer version: I began my writing career by publishing, in three months, 15 short stories in as many little literary magazines. After moving to San Diego in 1996 I became a freelance writer for quite literally every publication in that city, including San Diego Magazine, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and The San Diego Reader (which has the largest circulation of any alternative weekly publication in the country). During this time I also freelanced for websites AOL’s City Guide, Microsoft’s Sidewalk San Diego, and E! Online.

Three months into freelancing I was given a one-page column in San Diego’s largest music tabloid, SLAMM (now San Diego CityBeat); three months later I was named SLAMM’s editor.

After four months at SLAMM I was hired by The San Diego Union-Tribune (after their six-month nationwide search) as founding editor and primary writer for the Entertainment section of their then-new $4 million website. There (and always under the watchful scrutiny of a phalanx of the newspaper’s veteran print editors), I wrote and published, for six months straight, 30,000-35,000 words per week.

After one year at SignOn I took the position of managing editor of On Air, the monthly four-color subscriber magazine published by San Diego’s public broadcasting station, KPBS.

A year later I took the position of executive editor for San Diego’s Decor & Style magazine (148-page four-color monthly; circulation 55,000). A year after that I was hired as founding editor of a four-color magazine in San Diego called Downtown.

Following the success of Downtown I moved on to editing books—and from there to ghostwriting them.

In the spring of 2007 I started a blog, whereon I wrote about anything and everything on my mind. Over the course of its existence that blog received over 10 million page views (which means that from from roughly 2010-2014 I was one of the most read writers in the world). Many of the pieces first published on my blog were also featured on The Huffington Post.

In July of 2014, for all intents and purposes, I retired my blog, in order to return to my first love, which is writing fiction. About fourteen months later I finished my first novel, What I Did To You.

In December of 2015 (after my wife and I moved from San Diego to Asheville, NC), I ran a Kickstarter campaign for What I Did To You. That campaign raised $33,4311.

I’m currently about the business of getting What I Did To You properly published; writing and posting (every Thursday) a new installment of Ashes to Asheville, the novel I’m serializing here on my new website; sharing news, thoughts and ideas here; and working with my writing clients.

And … that’s about that!

If for any reason you’d care to contact me, please don’t hesitate to do so. Thanks again.
